Description:
The aim of this course is to give the participants a comprehensive view on DDR in order to increase their understanding of programmes and projects needed for a peaceful development. The course will combine the experiences from diffrent DDR programmes with theoretical views on the subject.
The course is based on the recently established UN Integrated DDR Standards (IDDRS) for guiding principles, preconditions, core strategies and approaches for undertaking integrated DDR. It outlines preconditions necessary for the success and sustainability of UN-supported DDR programmes. It then provides guidance on key UN strategies and approaches to DDR programmes and operations. Overviews of the UN's mandate as well as the international legal framework within which integrated DDR programmes operate are discussed.
The participants are expected to have a basic knowledge of Peace Support Operations and a need or strong interest to learn DDR. Invited participants are civil servants, diplomats, civilian police, military personnel, academics and representatives from International and Non-Governmental Organisations. The course also provides the participants with an opportunity to build an international network.
The cost is free of charge. However, participants are expected to cover their own travel costs and costs for board and lodging. In a limited number of cases where sufficient funds are not available, scholarships may be granted to cover parts of these expenses.
